UK Watch Technologies – Wired Lockdown System Overview
UK Watch Technologies offers a robust, wired lockdown system engineered to deliver clear, immediate alerts during emergency situations. Designed for maximum reliability, our system operates independently from other alert infrastructures, significantly reducing confusion and supporting a swift, coordinated response.
Clear Communication Without Alarm Sounders
Unlike many systems on the market, we do not use generic alarm sounders to indicate a lockdown. In our extensive experience, even distinct tones fail to provide instant clarity. Staff and pupils often struggle to differentiate between a lockdown alert and other alarms—such as fire alarms—which can lead to catastrophic decisions, including evacuating into danger instead of sheltering in place.
No Reliance on Network-Based Systems
We also do not rely on network-based warning systems. While these may appear modern, we’ve personally witnessed critical failures—such as a server at a large secondary school inadvertently altering IP addresses—rendering the system inoperative with no visible indication. To eliminate this vulnerability, we designed our lockdown system to function more like a traditional fire alarm: hardwired and independent of network infrastructure.
How the System Works
Our system utilises wired speakers, physically connected to a mains-powered, battery-backed amplifier, which is activated by one or more wired initiation devices.
To avoid undetected battery failures, we do not use wireless devices for triggering the system, unless explicitly requested. In such cases, we use Police Response Grade wireless panic buttons. Typically, activation is done via physical LockDown Buttons, similar in appearance and function to fire alarm call points.
What Happens During a Lockdown?
Upon activation, the system initiates a two-fold response:
1. Audio Alert
A loud, unmistakable, pre-recorded voice message (opens a new Audio window) is broadcast through every speaker via a built-in voice synthesiser. This message can be tailored to your needs—such as the standard “LockDown” announcement—and can either repeat continuously until deactivation (recommended) or play for a set duration before automatically silencing.
2. Access Control Integration
Simultaneously, a ‘close and lock’ signal is sent to any electronically controlled doors or gates on the premises:
Our system integrates with virtually all access control platforms, with particularly simple integration available for Paxton Net2 systems. More complex systems can also be integrated depending on your existing infrastructure.
Resetting the System
Once the lockdown is lifted, a push-button reset reactivates access control systems and broadcasts a second voice message, such as “Lockdown Over,” which can be repeated as needed or set to auto-silence.
Additional Features
As a bonus, installing this system effectively equips the school with a site-wide public address system. By adding a simple microphone on a separate amplifier channel, live announcements can be made across the site.
Customisable Voice Synthesiser
The included voice synthesiser can store up to six pre-programmed messages—two reserved for lockdown, and four available for custom use. Clients often use these to:
The possibilities are virtually limitless, allowing the system to serve beyond emergency use and become a versatile communication tool for your site.
