Q1. Why should I pay a company to fit my system? I can buy the equipment online, so why shouldn't I do it myself?
An excellent question and one that we are regularly asked. Why shouldn't you buy the equipment from Amazon or Ali Express and then simply screw it to the wall yourself?
When it comes to protecting a business, security is about far more than installing a few cameras or alarms. A truly effective system combines CCTV, intruder alarms, and fire detection into a cohesive, reliable solution that protects people, property, and operations. While DIY systems may appear cost-effective at first, relying on a professional to design and install your security infrastructure provides significant advantages in performance, compliance, and long-term value.
One of the key benefits of using a professional is proper system design. Every commercial premises has unique risks, layouts, and operational requirements. A professional installer will carry out a thorough site survey to identify vulnerable access points, high-risk areas, fire hazards, and escape routes. They design a tailored system that ensures CCTV coverage is complete, intruder alarms protect all entry points, and fire alarms provide early detection throughout the building. DIY setups often miss critical areas, leading to blind spots in surveillance or gaps in alarm coverage that could prove costly. Unfortunately issues are rarely noticed until after an incident which goes undetected, is detected late or is captured with inferior footage.
Performance and reliability are also major factors. CCTV systems must capture clear, usable footage in all lighting conditions, while intruder alarms must respond instantly to unauthorised access, and fire alarms must trigger without delay in an emergency. Professionals select the right equipment for each application—such as low-light cameras, graded intruder alarm systems, and appropriately rated fire detection devices—and ensure everything is correctly configured. DIY systems frequently suffer from false alarms, poor image quality, or delayed responses due to incorrect setup or unsuitable equipment.
Bandwidth on your network is another consideration. A professional will know, for example, how to make an 8 Megapixel Camera use the same bandwidth as a 2 Megapixel camera, saving 75% on network usage, they will understand the different levels of Network switching, signal routing, if managed or dumb switches are needed, if PoE plus is needed, how to route signals through your modem, how to restrict access to your network, how to set up DDNS services and much more. Modern Security engineers are a combination of both Security and Network engineers with knowledge way above the standard level of knowledge required for a DIY install.
Compliance with regulations is particularly important in commercial environments. Fire alarm systems in the UK must meet strict standards (such as BS 5839), and businesses have legal responsibilities to ensure adequate fire detection and warning systems are in place. Similarly, intruder alarms often need to comply with UKAS and insurance requirements, and CCTV systems must adhere to SSAIB rules and data protection laws. Professional installers understand these regulations and ensure your systems are fully compliant, reducing the risk of legal issues, invalidated insurance, or fines.
Integration is another area where professional installation makes a significant difference. Modern security systems work best when they are connected. For example, a triggered intruder alarm can activate CCTV recording and send alerts, while fire alarms can integrate with access control systems to unlock doors for safe evacuation. Professionals design systems that communicate seamlessly, creating a unified security network rather than separate, disconnected components. DIY systems rarely achieve this level of integration and coordination.
Ongoing maintenance and support are equally critical. Security and safety systems must be regularly tested and maintained to ensure they function when needed. Fire alarms, in particular, require routine servicing to remain compliant and effective. Professional providers offer maintenance contracts, system health checks, and rapid support in case of faults. With a DIY approach, the responsibility for upkeep falls entirely on the business owner, increasing the risk of system failure or non-compliance over time.
A major problem for DIY installers is "Grey Imports". Much of the equipment sold online at a lower price comes from overseas and was specifically designed to match the legislation of the country of origin. Externally the equipment will look exactly the same, internally and operationally it will be different. This may not cause you an issue UNTIL there is a fault. The vast majority of professional Security Equipment manufacturers will not give any form of warranty or technical support on a Grey Import, they will ask for the serial number of the device, track where it was sold and refuse assistance if it was not originally destined for the UK market meaning that you are left relying on the original seller, many of which are not installers or professional companies but simply "drop shippers". UK Firmware updates rarely work on Grey Imports & finding the correct update for a Grey Import can be challenging unless you can read technical Chinese. An incorrect update will either have no effect therefor not resolving stability or security issues or will simply 'brick' your device rendering it unusable.
Finally, there is the question of long-term value. While DIY solutions may seem cheaper upfront, they often lead to higher costs through poor performance, frequent false alarms, or the need for replacement and reinstallation. A professionally designed and installed system is built to last, scalable as your business grows, and configured to deliver reliable protection from day one. This makes it a far more cost-effective and dependable investment.
In summary, combining CCTV, intruder alarms, and fire alarm systems into a professionally designed solution ensures comprehensive protection for your business. From expert design and regulatory compliance to reliable performance and ongoing support, professional installation delivers a level of security and peace of mind that DIY systems simply cannot match.
